Why PlasticScore?

Our vision “To make sustainable living easy for everyone” is at the heart of the change we’re creating through PlasticScore.  By seeing what kind of materials and services are offered at restaurants, we can make more informed decisions about where we dine.  Reducing plastic pollution starts with each of us making decisions to reject the convenience of single-use plastics for more sustainable materials and practices.

Eating is a necessity of life, but meals which generate waste that last thousands of years is a choice.  Each time we use single-use plastics with our meals, we contribute to the growing probability that these items will end up in our environment, our waterways, and even our bodies.  The Plastic Pollution Coalition Plastic-Free Eats Guide currently estimates that 269,000 tons of plastic pollution exists in our waterways and oceans, more than 100 million pieces of plastic utensils are used by Americans every day, and 500 million plastic straws are thrown away in the U.S. alone every day.  These numbers are daunting, but this trend does not have to continue.

PlasticScore formed on 5/17/2019 at a Techstars Startup Weekend hosted by New Hope Network in Boulder, Colorado.  The event started with an opportunity for anyone to pitch an idea in Food + Tech, and ended with my two co-founders and I making life-altering decisions to go all-in to make our idea a reality.  None of us knew then what that weekend would bring, but what we do know right now is that we are more excited than ever to launch the app, and to help create the change we wish to see.

We hope you join us in our mission “To eliminate unnecessary dining waste” and use PlasticScore to inform your dining choices.  Through our collective voice, we will help make changes that reduce plastic pollution in our environment, our oceans, and ourselves.
